The Walking Dead is taking on Pokémon Go with its own augmented-reality mobile game.
Announced Tuesday, AMC and Next Games (the developers behind The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land) are launching The Walking Dead: Our World, an app coming to iOS and Android beginning Thursday, July 12.
Much like with Pokémon Go,
players will be able to move their avatars by walking around
neighborhoods. Instead of catching creatures by chucking Pokéballs at
them, you’ll be roaming the landscape to fight walkers, collect stashes,
rescue survivors, embark on missions, and team up with other players to
complete weekly challenges.
Users will also be able to collect characters from The Walking Dead TV series, like Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, Danai Gurira’s Michonne, and Norman Reedus’ Daryl. Lincoln is about to exit the AMC drama with the forthcoming season 9 story, but now you’ll be able to keep him close to your heart in digital form.
This is the latest augmented-reality game since game company Niantic launched a global phenomenon with Pokémon Go. A Harry Potter-themed version is also in the works for an undisclosed release date.
The Walking Dead: Our World is coming just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con festivities, which kick off with preview night on July 18. Attendees can hunt for walkers as they hunt down their favorite celebrities.
